If the EPUB has no fixed print pagination, the tool starts with an estimated page count and lets you replace it with the page total shown by your own reader.

How the progress estimate works

The reading guide helps you estimate how long it will take to read a book from the catalog. Based on the book's word count and a typical reading speed, you can gauge whether it fits into an evening, a weekend, or a longer commitment. The median book in this collection takes about 177 minutes to read.

The catalog includes books of all lengths, from short works under 10,000 words to comprehensive surveys over 200,000 words. Use the length and time categories to find books that match the time you have available.

Length categories

Books are grouped into short (41 titles), medium (25), long (14), and epic (19). Short books may be under 20,000 words, while epic ones exceed 100,000.

Time categories

Based on reading time, books are labeled quick (39), steady (23), immersive (19), or marathon (18). A quick read might take under an hour, while a marathon could take over six.

Your reading speed

The estimates assume a typical silent reading pace. If you read faster or slower, adjust the estimate accordingly. The tool gives you a starting point for planning.

Planning Your Pace

Reading Tracker: Making Progress Page by Page

Reading Tracker is a simple tool for planning your reading progress. It records pages, not minutes or sections. You set a current page, a total page count, and a daily page goal. The tracker then calculates estimated remaining time and finish days based on those inputs.

If a book does not have a fixed page count in the catalog, the tracker estimates one by dividing the word count by 250 words per page. You can replace that estimate with the page count from your own edition or reading app. This flexibility is useful because page counts vary between editions.

Setting Up Your Reading Plan

To begin, choose a book and note its word count. For example, Squirrels and Other Fur-Bearers — Background and Themes has 37,422 words. With the default 250 words per page, the estimated page count would be about 150 pages. If you set a daily goal of 20 pages, the tracker would estimate about 8 days to finish, assuming you start at page 1.

You can adjust the daily goal to match your available time. A higher goal, like 30 pages, would shorten the estimated finish to 5 days. The tracker uses simple proportions: estimated remaining time is estimated minutes times remaining pages divided by total pages, and finish days are calculated by dividing remaining pages by the daily goal, rounding up.

Tracking Your Progress

As you read, update the current page. The tracker will recalculate the remaining time and finish days based on your progress. This gives you a realistic sense of For readers who are on track or need to adjust your daily goal. The history is stored in your browser's localStorage, so no account is needed.

One practical tip: if your edition has a different page count, replace the total pages with that number. For instance, a paperback edition might have 180 pages instead of the estimated 150. This ensures the time estimates are accurate for your specific copy.

Why Pages, Not Minutes?

The tracker Catalogue maintenance uses source records and bibliographic context. Minutes can vary with reading speed, but pages are fixed. By setting a daily page goal, you create a manageable routine. For a book like Squirrels and Other Fur-Bearers, a 20-page daily goal is achievable and keeps you progressing steadily.

The tracker does not track sections or minutes as progress, only pages. This simplicity is its strength: you know exactly where you are and what remains. It is a tool for commitment, not for measuring reading speed or quality.
